Xanthosoma es un
género de cerca de 50 especies de plantas tropicales y subtropicales de la familia
Araceae. Son todas nativas de América. Varias especies son cultivadas por sus cormos
ricos en almidón, y son una importante fuente de alimento en varias regiones.
Son conocidas como mafafa, otoe, malanga, cocoñame, ocumo, bore, yautía, chonque,
macabo, rascadera, quequisque y tania.
Es muy popular en África Occidental, China,
Polinesia, las islas del Océano Índico y de las Antillas, aunque también se
consumen en américa del Sur y América central. Su pulpa posee una tonalidad
amarillenta. Se le conoce como malanga isleña, cará, kalo, yautía coco, pituca,
bituca, onkucha, ocumo chino, unkucha, otoe, papa balusa, madumbe y edoy torán.
White Malanga
Xanthosoma is a genus

known as an elegant leaf because of its lustrous and large elephant ears, and a
certain resemblance to the large leaf with the elephant's ear. Another variety
of this species has the leaves torn but with their parts joined at the edge of
the leaf, and is called Adam's rib.
Yellow Malanga or taro
(Colocasia esculenta)
It is very popular in West Africa, China, Polynesia, the
islands of the Indian Ocean and the West Indies, although they are also
consumed in South America and Central America. Its pulp has a yellowish hue. It
is known as island malanga, cará, kalo, yautía coco, pituca, bituca, onkucha,
chinese occumo, unkucha, otoe, potato balusa, madumbe and edoy torán.
Both types have a
similar flavor and are used in soups, casseroles, sweets, mashed potatoes,
breads, cookies and fried foods.
